Most qualified candidates aren't looking for a job the day you find them. How Drip Campaigns Work

A drip campaign is a pre-planned sequence of messages, usually emails but increasingly including LinkedIn messages and SMS, sent to a candidate at defined intervals over days, weeks, or months. The messages are triggered either by a calendar schedule or by specific candidate behaviors, such as opening an email, clicking a link, or visiting a job posting. Each message in the sequence serves a distinct purpose: early messages build awareness and credibility, middle messages provide value through relevant content or role alerts, and later messages make a direct ask.

In a recruitment context, a typical drip sequence for a passive candidate might run eight to twelve weeks. The first message introduces the recruiter and acknowledges that the candidate likely isn't looking. The second shares a relevant market insight or salary benchmark for their specialty. The third references a specific role that matches their background. If the candidate opens but doesn't reply, a follow-up branch triggers. If they click a job link, the sequence accelerates toward a direct outreach call.

Take a technical staffing firm placing senior backend engineers. A recruiter sources a strong Go developer who's been at their current company for two years. Instead of sending a single cold message, they enroll the candidate in a 10-week drip. Week one: a brief intro and a link to a salary survey for Go developers in their metro. Week three: a message about a new client with a fully remote senior role. Week six: a short note asking if their situation has changed. Week eight: a direct ask for a 15-minute call. Open rates on this kind of tailored sequence routinely run two to three times higher than single cold messages.

Drip Campaign vs Bulk Email

Bulk email sends the same message to a large list simultaneously, optimized for reach. A drip campaign sends individualized sequences to specific candidates based on timing and behavior, optimized for conversion. The distinction matters in recruitment because bulk email to a candidate list looks like spam and gets treated as spam. A well-structured drip feels like a recruiter who is paying attention.

Most modern ATS platforms and recruitment CRMs, including tools like Bullhorn, Loxo, and Gem, support drip automation natively. The difference between bulk and drip is enforced at the platform level through sequence logic, not just intent.
